IBM's Power 8

With 32GB DDR3 memory sticks, each Power8 socket will be able to support 1TB of main memory, and presuming the high-end Power8 machine has 32 sockets like the Power7-based Power 795 server does, that means IBM can deliver a box with 32TB of memory across 384 cores and 3,072 processor threads.

Steve Ballmer Failed to Take Microsoft Beyond Windows

 30 years after Windows 1.0
___________________________
99% BAD HARDWARE WEEK:
As AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski wrote on Friday: “Here’s one metric by which Ballmer will be judged harshly. On the last day of 1999, the day before he took over as CEO, Microsoft’s market capitalization was $600 billion. On the day before he announced his intention to retire, it was less than $270 billion.”
I worry that Microsoft will go the way of Kodak, RIM and Nokia -- or even the former Soviet Union -- all of which tanked because they were busy protecting old turf.

Muammar Gaddafi once asked Joe Biden why Libya was on the U.S. list of terrorist nations. “Because you’re a terrorist!” Biden replied to his face.

It was a dumb tweet. I'm sorry. I deserve the backlash. (Maybe not the anti-Semitic stuff but otherwise I asked for it.)

Construction Intel's 450mm Fab 'Well Underway'

Construction of D1X module 2 began in January 2013 after the necessary permissions were obtained, according to an Intel spokesperson. The fab is expected to cost $2 billion, not including equipment, but there is no schedule for when the fab will start, the spokesperson added.
MacKenzie referred to original D1X project as Mod1. The expansion will feature a second module, called Mod2, that will be built onto Mod1. It will serve the same research and development function — in other words, it won't be a high-volume production facility

As you can see one new 450nm wafers fab is able to produce as much chips as TWO old 300mm fabs + almost one old 200 mm. Three flies with one hit !

99% BAD HARDWARE WEEK:  But, we know. Nikon plans to have ArF immersion 450mm prototype tools in 2015-16. Mid 2015. With a 14nm low volume chips.
450mm is expected to be in production by 2018 and 10nm,” said Hamid Zarringhalam, executive vice president at Nikon Precision. “We will ship development tools earlier than that.” By 2015, Nikon plans to ship “early learning tools” based on 193nm immersion for 450mm, Zarringhalam said. Nikon has already garnered “multiple orders” for the systems, he added. Intel’s new 450mm Japan Metrology Center (JMC) in Tsukuba is confirmed.
EXCLUSIVE:  Intel is already producing 14nm demo chips. On 450mm wafers in Albany. Though its half pitch is actually 22nm. That should be enough for this world supply until year 2033. But without old chip fabs now mainly for peripheral chips. Thus, no more need for processor sockets in Intel's future and peripheral chips. Most of them must be BGA even before year 2017. Enough is enough: Obama promises NSA reforms

President Barack Obama said yesterday that he would pursue reforms to open the legal proceedings surrounding government surveillance programs to greater scrutiny, the administration’s most-concerted response yet to a series of disclosures about secret monitoring efforts.

The NSA, among the most secretive institutions in government, also released yesterday a summary of the programs it operates under several provisions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and the Patriot Act. Intelligence agencies will also set up a website with the goal of better explaining their legal authorities and actions.

“While the initial reforms outlined by the president are a necessary and welcome first step, they are not nearly sufficient,” said Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, in a statement that also urged Obama to “release the relevant FISA Court opinions and agency memos that have created a body of secret law that is far removed from public oversight and adequate congressional review.”

How they have 100% spied you and since when

September 29, 2004, Mountain View, CA — Narus, Inc., the leading carrier-class IP platform software provider, announced it has appointed NSA William P. Crowell to its board of directors. Crowell brings extensive knowledge of information technology and security systems.
 December 10, 2007
Narus technology has long been recognized for its ability to identify and track almost all network and application protocols across very large networks.
“The latest iteration of NIS follows a long line of powerful and unique products developed by Narus and once again raises the bar, providing unparalleled monitoring and intercept capabilities to service providers and government organizations around the world.”

Targeting and capturing webmail traffic is a difficult challenge due to the proprietary and frequent changing nature of webmail services being monitored. The NarusInsight Intercept Suite (NIS) has solved this problem and is now capable of precision targeting, capturing and reconstructing numerous aspects of webmail traffic including email, chat, calendaring, draft folders, address books and much more. Traffic from all nodes and numerous protocols can be reassembled and viewed from a single management station or distributed across multiple stations. In addition, NIS supports a large percentage of all webmail services, including Google Gmail, MSN Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, and Gawab Mail (English and Arabic versions).
Narus helps customers around the world like AT&T, Korea Telecom, KDDI, Telecom Egypt, Reliance (India), Saudi Telecom, US Cellular, Pakistan Telecom Authority, in areas of network security, traffic classification and monitoring.
A single NarusInsight machine can monitor traffic equal to the maximum capacity (10 Gbit/s) of around 39,000 DSL lines or 195,000 telephone modems. But, in practical terms, since individual internet connections are not continually filled to capacity, the 10 Gbit/s capacity of one NarusInsight installation enables it to monitor the combined traffic of several million broadband users. Its 700 instalations are able to monitor all world's individual Web connections !!

New revelations on secret U.S. surveillance of the Internet follows soon

The Rio de Janeiro-based columnist for Britain's Guardian newspaper said he has recruited the help of experts to understand some of the 15,000 to 20,000 classified documents from the National Security Agency that Snowden passed him, some of which are "very long and complex and take time to read."

The amount of personal data available to GCHQ from internet and mobile traffic has increased by 7,000% in the past five years – but 60% of all Britain's refined intelligence still appears to come from the NSA.
