Would our hardware work better on DC power supply ?

I mean more efficient. I am afraid it would. The latest advancement in supercomputer power supply is just that ... DC.
No power converters and transformers at all modules. Thus, for smaller power communities DC is simple better. That is why it took 80 years to die in NY.

Bad comment: Is our PC actually a small DC community? You have switching PSU that conerts to 12V, 5V and 3,3 V. Could they switch DC power supply?. Definitely, yes. However , your beloved Phenom should work at 1,216V. Then yet another conversion? Right. It is done at the mobo power converter. To supply up to 90 amperes to processor. And what about supercomputer? They will have yet another intermeddiate stage: UPS. What the hell it does? Converts AC TO DC and then again to AC.
How much do we lost at all those conversions?. A lot of. Enough for noticable global warming. Because in each moment hundred of millions PCs and servers are online. :(

Con Edison has always been notorious for its sudden power surges that blew home light bulbs and fuses. However, for the past 80 years the power supply stability problem has been solved, I hope.
