80 processors computer on a board
SpiNNaker - A Universal Spiking Neural Network Architecture.
In this way the massive parallelism extending to thousands or
millions of processors is possible.
Actually, we have on board torus based router able to connect 80 SoCs.
Clock (if any) is order of only 200 Mhz. ARM 968E-S, low power processor core is used.
Each core also connects to the SpiNNaker chip's Comms-NoC which provides a path into the SpiNNaker chip's "Router" to enable the transmission of data packets either to other processor cores within the chip or to processors of other interconnected SpiNNaker chips via one of the six input/output links of the SpiNNaker chip.
Processing power of this board is at least 50 GFlops .
100 000 such mini boards enable peak 5 PFlops supercomputer.
Thenerds calls interested.

Windows 8 goes 3D and much more
According to the slides, Windows 8 will include improved connectivity and support a touch interface, along with stereoscopic 3D and wireless TV. A security option allows log-in through facial recognition.
Windows 8 machines clearly won't be crash-proof, unfortunately, as the company is promising an instant reset button which allows the users to restart without losing data.

Thinning Atmosphere Will Contribute to Space Junk Longevity
Brown Team Finds Widespread Glacial Meltwater Valleys On Mars
Brown University planetary geologists have documented running water that sprang from glaciers throughout the Martian middle latitudes as recently as the Amazonian epoch, several hundred million years ago.
These glaciofluvial valleys were, in essence, tributaries of water created when enough sunlight reached the glaciers to melt a thin layer on the surface. This, the Brown researchers write, led to "limited surface melting" that formed channels that ran for several kilometers and could be more than 150 feet wide.

Obama's Twitter hacker receives a suspended sentence
A 23-year-old Frenchman has been given a suspended jail sentence for hacking into US President Obama's account on micro-blogging site Twitter.
Mr Cousteix was caught hacking into the president's account in March after FBI investigators in the US alerted French authorities.
Investigators found that the hacker deduced the passwords of Twitter administrators from public information on the web, thus gaining access to the accounts of important and famous individuals.

Unbelivable new SD card speeds, up to 104 MBps
The SD Association announced today two new high-speed performance symbols for the fastest SDXC and SDHC devices and memory cards. The first symbol identifies products with businterface speeds up to 104 Megabytes per second for greater device performance. The second symbol identifies SD memory cards and products with a performance option allowing real-time video recording.
The sheer variety of high-performing, feature-rich devices has dictated the need for a wide variety of SD memory card speeds and capacities to maximize device performance and meet consumer expectations. With more than 2.5 billion SD memory cards in the market today, the new high-speed performance capabilities will co-exist with earlier SD memory cards still used by consumers, as those cards are still interoperable with the newest host devices.

Coming in July: Free 3D Firmware Upgrade for Sony’s Nex-3 and Nex-5 Cameras
The upgrade for the Nex-3 and Nex-5 should be available from Sony in July. Using the 3D Sweep Panorama mode, the models are able to capture 3D using a single lens.

Lets be serious: Sony's Nex 7 should look like this
After reading most posts related to the NEX, reading the different critics and reviews about the actual NEX-3 and NEX-5, I came with a completly new design for the NEX-7.
One of the latest Sony patents disclosed a new kind of sensor. Pixel size does change based on their color characteristic.
- no viewfinder: what Sony was thinking, a camera without viewfinder is quite useless, how can you frame without one?
- not enough buttons and no dials: how can you use it wihout proper knobs and dial, completly ineffective.
- childish UI: we don't need all those shooting tips, I know how to handle a camera, I don't need that. And the ISO settings burried in the brightness/color menu, I need to change it every picture or so!

China soon to be the biggest manufacturing nation
If China does become the world’s biggest manufacturer, it will be a return to the top slot for a nation which – according to economic historians – was the world’s leading country for goods production for more than 1,500 years up until the 1850s, when Britain took over for a brief spell, mainly due to the impetus of the industrial revolution.
Tsubame 2.0 - 2,39 Petaflops
The computation capacity of the system is 2.39 PFLOPS (petaflops, double-precision value), which ranks second in the "Top500," a ranking of supercomputers, as of June 2010.
The backbone of the supercomputer system consists of 2,816 units of Intel Corp's "Xeon 5600" microprocessor (developing code: Westmere-EP), which has six cores and operates at a frequency of 2.93GHz, and 4,224 units of Nvidia Corp's "Tesla M2050" GPU. The university structured a multilevel storage using not only DRAMs such as DDR3 but also SSDs (solid state drives) composed of flash memories. While the total memory capacity of the backbone system's DRAMs is 80.6 Tbytes for microprocessors and 12.7 Tbytes for GPUs, the total memory capacity of the SSDs is 173.9 Tbytes.
"We are aiming at around 30 PFLOPS, but the power consumption of the Tsubame 3.0 (2014 -2015) will be equivalent to or less than that of the Tsubame 2.0," he said.

Antarctica Glacier Melt Causing Rise in Sea Level !
A new study by scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the National Oceanography Center and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) found that the melting of Antarctica's Pine Island Glacier is a large contributor to sea level rise globally.
Since our first measurements in the the Amundsen Sea, estimates of Antarctica's recent contributions to sea level rise have changed from near-zero to significant and increasing.
We need to look much further into the glacier's history in order to understand if what we see now is part of a long term trend of the West Antartica ice sheet contraction.

Intel engineer devises plan to stop Gulf oil spill
The trouble? He has tried to call the government about his plan, but no one will return his calls
Laughlin, a semiconductor field service engineer who does vender work for Intel, said he has devised a plan to turn off the oil. His plan includes dropping a locking collar that goes over the open pipe that has a steel insert that would be driven into the pipe by the use of a ratcheting system. The steel insert, resembling a spike, starts out narrow at the end and reaches the diameter of the open pipe on the other, complete with series of brass seals that would seal off the leak.
Laughlin said the fact that the steel insert or “plug” starts narrow and then gradually increases in girth is critical to the plan.

Google: Windows use is a security effort
One Google employee as saying: We're not doing any more Windows
Because, ChromeOS is coming in late fall.

Thus ordinary 250 GB storage for Win7 translates in only 4 GB for Chrome OS. Though that doesn't mean Chrome OS netbooks will be cheaper that the Win ones.
Microsoft on Thursday waved off Google's efforts to develop an open source operating system, saying that software developers would have to create different versions of the same application for different brands. Anyway 4GB is always more secure than 300 GB.

Intel announced a new 32-core server chip based on a new high-performance computing server architecture that mixes general x86 cores with specialized cores for faster processing of highly parallel scientific and commercial applications.
