Intel, AMD Hold Lead on Microprocessor Market Share: Report

In a year of major changes for the global microprocessor industry, one thing remained the same: leading suppliers Intel and Advanced Micro Devices in 2010 maintained their customary ranks in the market, research from IT analytics firm IHS iSuppli indicated. Intel finished the year with 81.0 percent share of global microprocessor revenue, up a scant 0.4 percentage points from 80.6 percent in 2009, allowing it to maintain leadership. Meanwhile, AMD ended the year with 11.4 percent share, down 0.8 points from 12.2 percent in 2009, keeping it in second place.

Intel's 22nm Ivy Bridge and AMD's 32nm FX on COmputex

Intel is preparing to unveil its next-generation processors based on the Ivy Bridge architecture as early as by Computex 2011 (May 30 to June 4), according to Commercial Times, a Chinese language business newspaper. Ivy Bridge is an gemetrical shrink of the Sandy Bridge architecture, processors based on it will be manufactured on the 22 nanometer silicon fabrication process. Intel launched its Sandy Bridge 32 nm processors at CES 2011, in January.

In related news from the same source, AMD has also accelerated the production of its Llano APUs and is expected to begin shipping the APUs to ODM/OEM makers in May at the earliest instead of the original schedule set in the third quarter. FX launch at June 11th.

New compact laser diode breakthrough

Until now, the biggest challenge has been the failure rate of these tiny devices. They don’t work very well when they face huge workloads; the stress makes them crack.

IBM has another complementary solution. The modulator's waveguide structure, as well as the size of the device are both limited by the wavelength of light used. IBM's current generation coupler has a 500nm waveguide, and the device itself is a mere 200 micrometers long, half the wavelength of the laser's light. This makes it easily small enough to fit between current generation multi-core processor cores.

The device is many times more efficient than current bus technology. IBM bills speeds at 100 to 1,000 times faster than electrical, with energy consumption of 50 milliwatts or less.

Cell phones are 'Stalin's dream,' says free software movement founder

Nearly three decades into his quest to rid the world of proprietary software, Richard Stallman sees a new threat to user freedom: smartphones.

"I don't have a cell phone. I won't carry a cell phone," says Stallman, founder of the free software movement and creator of the GNU operating system. "It's Stalin's dream. Cell phones are tools of Big Brother. I'm not going to carry a tracking device that records where I go all the time, and I'm not going to carry a surveillance device that can be turned on to eavesdrop."

Stallman firmly believes that only free software can save us from our technology, whether it be in cell phones, PCs, tablets or any other device. And when he talks about "free," he's not talking about the price of the software -- he's talking about the ability to use, modify and distribute software however you wish.

Processor Whispers – About Chancellors and 3D Chips

IBM intends to produce the Power8 processor, planned for 2013 (in 28 or 22nm), using 3D stack technology, with a directly linked memory and also, probably, a layer of small specialized computing cores adapted for specific intended uses. Maybe Intel will surprise us with 3D technology for its Haswell processor scheduled for 2013, perhaps, with a large "stacked" 16MB L3 cache. In any case, the processor's internal use name already includes a 3: H3

BAD HARDWARE: Intel's Rockwell 2014 will integrate in one die all what Haswell did in 2. So, what use of 3D? at Intel? HAswell FMA will use 4 operands FMA. That will require increased bandwidth and 16MB L3 accessed in a more direct way then previously. Oh by the way, IBM uses FMA since 1990 ! At CeBIT, IBM boss Palmisano tactfully covered up the slip-up of the German chancellor Angela Merkel who, during the presentation of IBM's 3D prototype chip, had asked him, "Do you take that from Intel?" His reply, "No, ours are better", was almost drowned by the audience's laughter.

3D DRAM integration technology in 2013 !

The group hopes to accelerate the development of the technology. The "introduction vehicle" for the effort is a wide I/O DRAM for cell phones, he said. Device production is targeted for 2013.
Experts define a true 3-D package as one that stacks various chips vertically and then connects them by deploying TSVs. The aim is to shorten the interconnections between the chips, reduce die sizes and boost device bandwidths.
One of the big and recent announcements in the arena came from Xilinx Inc., which recently discussed a "stacked silicon interconnect" FPGA.
However, there are several problems with TSV technology: Lack of EDA design tools; complexity of designs; integration of assembly and test; cost; and lack of standards.

AMD Finalizes Shipment Dates for Next-Gen Chips.

Will begin commercial shipments of its high-end FX-series chips based on Bulldozer micro-architecture in the second half of June and will initiate supplies of A-series code-named Llano accelerated processing units (APUs) in early July.

The code-named Zambezi processors based on Bulldozer micro-architecture with four, six or eight cores will belong to FX-series and will be sold under AMD Vision Black and AMD Vision Ultimate labels.

AMD's product family will include FX-series, A-series and E-series microprocessors.

By contrast, Intel's largest selling (by volume) product continues to be Pentium branded CPUs, manufactured at 45nm/65nm, and in general, Intel takes several years to transition to a new generation of CPUs.

Just when you thought high-speed cash equities trading could not get any faster, trading geeks have thrown a new concept into the mix: the picosecond.
The potential value of millisecond, or indeed a picosecond, was vividly demonstrated during a particularly bloody period on Black Friday, October 10, 2008, when the UK market plummeted at a hair-raising £250m a second.

Bad pixel plague grounded Webb's telescope

NASA allows no more than 5 per cent of a detector's pixels to be hot by the end of the telescope's five-year space mission. At this rate, the detectors may exceed this limit before the telescope even leaves the ground, says Rieke.

HP is making nanostores using memristors

Historically, the first computer to achieve terascale computing (10^12, or one trillion operations per second) was demonstrated in the late 1990s. In the 2000s, the first petascale computer was demonstrated with a thousand-times better performance. Extrapolating these trends, we can expect the first exascale computer (with one million trillion operations per second) to appear around the end of this next decade. In Computer nanostores January article:
From Micro-processors to Nanostores: Rethinking Data-Centric Systems, the author explores that idea.

BAD HARDWARE: Calculation alone uses only 3% of needed energy. 30 times more energy is used for data moving. Look at the processor. 30 times of die area is used for cache than for processing itself. The same thing repeat in the data center.
