As many as 4 million people are without electricity and fires are burning unchecked along the Japanese coast, according to reports. Many electronics companies are located in northeast Japan in the areas worst hit by Japan's earthquake and tsunami.
"There are car and semiconductor factories in northern Japan, so there will be some economic impact due to damage to factories," said Yasuo Yamamoto, senior economist at Mizuho Research Institute in Tokyo.
