Finally: China says it has built the world's fastest supercomputer, overtaking United States
The Tianhe-1 machine housed at the National Center for Supercomputing in the northern port city of Tianjin is capable of sustained computing of 2.507 petaflops, the equivalent of 2,507 trillion calculations, per second.
As is typical of new supercomputers, the Tianhe-1a uses the latest processors to gain a speed edge. They include a 2.93 GHz version of the six-core Intel Westmere processor and the Nvidia Fermi M2050.
The Tianhe-1a is built up from 7,168 nodes. Each node contains two Westmere processors, one Fermi graphics card and 32 Gbytes memory.
BAD HARDWARE WEEK: Actually, we already had a case with Japan. However, this one is much worse for US computing supremacy.
