Intel announced long distance 10 Gb wired Ethernet card

High-speed server connectivity — once reserved for costly, proprietary technologies such as High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters and grid-based computing — can now be achieved with the consistent connectivity of the 10 Gigabit AT Server Adapter.
The company’s Ethernet products support a variety of operating systems, including Windows, Linux, Fedora, FreeBSD, and VMware ESX.Dell has committed to using the new adapter in upcoming models of its PowerConnect Ethernet switch.

Actually 10 GbE wire cards are some time at the market, but they were wire length restricted to 10 meters range only.
Now already installed data center ethernet wire cablings may be used for 10 Gb Ethernet. For a modest price of $1K. Next year the prices should drop at least 2 times.
In 2002 1 Gb Ethernet card gained the same status ahead of 100Mb Ethernet cards.
