AMD’s First 45nm Deneb 11h family to Arrive on the 8th of Jan. 2009.


Advanced Micro Devices plans to announce its first desktop microprocessors produced using 45nm process technology on the 8th of January, 2009, the first day of Consumer Electronics Show. The code-named Deneb chips will not get truly high clock-speed boost, but will be able to offer substantially higher performance thanks to larger cache and architectural improvements. Actually, they will easily reach 3Ghz clock but still at 125W TDP.


NVIDIA GPU will hit 20 Tflops in 2013 !


AMD's GPU hits probably too. So, CPU is obviously dead and Intel is quite possible in a big future problems. I can't imagine that NVIDIA is able to make 20TFlops GPU and inherently unable to make integrated on GPU chip one or more X86 processors.

The laptops have no net connection; officials suspect the worm may have been transferred via a USB flash drive owned by an astronaut. National Security Agency listens your Internet traffic

Two security researchers have demonstrated a new technique to stealthily intercept internet traffic on a scale previously presumed to be unavailable to anyone outside of intelligence agencies like the National Security Agency.

The tactic exploits the internet routing protocol BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) to let an attacker surreptitiously monitor unencrypted internet traffic anywhere in the world, and even modify it before it reaches its destination.

The internal investigation into THP Lieutenant Ronnie Shirley gets a boost from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Lt. Shirley is already accused of gaining unauthorized access to a database used by all state law enforcement agencies.

He allegedly snooped into the personal data, such as driving histories, of 182 people. Now, THP wants the TBI to step in and check out other data bases and state equipment to see if Lt. Shirley also conducted unauthorized criminal background checks.

The database used to produce the government's terror watch lists is "crippled by technical flaws," according to the chairman of a House technology oversight subcommittee—and the system designed to replace it may be even worse.

Intel's Quicksuck TM technology


AMD think that something is rotten in Nehalem kingdom. Intel's Quickpath (copy of AMD's HT) technology is far behind the schedule. Idea was to deliver Quickpath together with new core architecture to the broad market by the year end. But seems that something went wrong, and after that INTEL's Quickpath became Quicksuck TM technology.

The key phrase in Intel's literature is "up to" -- that could mean 6.4 GB/sec is a maximum or peak rate, rather than a sustained rate.

For comparison: PCI Express is the most common expansion bus used in PCs today. It typically uses a signaling rate of 2.5 GHz, which should theoretically enable as much as 8 GB/sec. In practice, that theory goes out the window, as the usual perceived transfer rate is more like 250 MB/sec.

Beside, you can forget all DDR3 2000 modules with voltages over 1.65V. ANd without fast memory, you can only fast ... suck.

Intel's Nehalem in A0 stage of development got an official name ?


Christened as Core i7. Does it mean we will have to wait 7 next Nehalem iterations to see real product ready for OEM's, not for IDFs only?.
Let me remind you. AMD Barcelona was in A0 stage of development in November 2006. It would finally take B3 revision to be functional only after year and half. Thus, expect Nehalem as a finished product as postponed as in 2010.
Alas currently in A0 stage.

Intel already sells 45nm processors, and it is expected to release a handful of new 45nm server and high-end desktop chips, based on the Core i7 microarchitecture, by the end of the year. But AMD thinks it will be a long time before Intel gets 2P and 4P server versions of Nehalem out the door.

Switchable Graphics

Integrated graphics are the graphics capabilities that come built in the chipset.

Discrete graphics are graphics provided by an external graphics chip, usually by nVIDIA or ATI. These have their own dedicated graphics memory which frees up main system memory for other tasks.


The major drawback is that this technology uses architectural improvements in Windows Vista to do its magic and will not work with XP systems. There have been many requests to make this so, and the team is studying whether this would be feasible in a future release.

For those of you running XP, you still have a choice. In BIOS, there is a setting for the graphics subsystem that allows you to choose to run in either integrated or discrete mode. You would have to reboot and go into BIOS to change your preference, but could still switch on an occasional basis.

You automatically get switchable graphics capabilities when you choose one of our Montevina systems with an ATI graphics chip. These include the ThinkPad T400, T500, R400, and W500.


Super funny: Pathological Computer Use Syndrome

Psychiatrist Jerald Block believes more should be done to recognize "pathological computer use" (PCU) and to devise ways to treat it. Block says it's been proposed that four criteria be met for a diagnosis of PCU:

1. Computer use must be excessive (taking context into account);
2. There must be signs of tolerance (a need to spend more time on a computer or games console to achieve the same level of satisfaction);
3. The computer use must be mood altering; and finally and most importantly,
4. The computer use must have led to problems, for example with relationships.

Help, I recognized all of the 4 encountered symptoms at myself.

However, here is the remedy:
Researchers at WVU's College of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences are offering the only program in the state to help participants lead healthier lives, by logging on to the computer.

IBM and AMD first at 22nm milestone

Yorktown Heights (NY) – IBM and its chip development partners made a stunning announcement today, apparently beating Intel in the successful production of the first functional 22 nm SRAM cell. 22 nm processors are still three years out in the future, but IBM’s news is a good sign that chip manufacturer will be able to easily scale to this new level by the end of 2011. It appears that, for the first time in several decades, Intel may have to put some extra time into its research and development efforts to make sure it can keep its manufacturing lead at 22 nm and beyond.

Transistors go vertical


There is obviously no more place in a plane. Actually there is, but wiring takes more than reduction in manufacturing process gives up. Thus, the only promising direction for transistor integration is up, vertically.

BeSang said its process, which is protected by over 25 patent applications, will allow flash, DRAM and SRAM to be placed atop logic, microprocessor cores and SoCs.

Now, seems myriad of processor in memory possible designs are viable. The most promising at this moment seems is Intel's Larrabee. When Intel will apply idea? Well, not before Larabee is out in 2010, actually that means in second iteration say in 2012 and later. That will push computing rate ahead.

What's Behind the iPhone 3G Glitches ?

Dropped calls and choppy Web surfing on Apple's latest smartphone stem from an Infineon chip. One source says Apple programmed the Infineon chip to demand a more powerful 3G signal than the iPhone really requires. So if too many people try to make a call or go on the Internet in a given area, some of the devices will decide there's insufficient power and switch to the slower network—even if there is enough 3G bandwidth available. A fix is on the way.

Nomura's Windsor notes that the glitches are reminiscent of the problems carriers had with handsets from Nokia (NOK) and other manufacturers earlier in the decade when they were rolling out their 3G networks in Europe, adding that they may not have a lasting impact on Apple's reputation, especially if the company is able to avoid a recall. In other words, the iPhone may simply be suffering the growing pains common to cutting-edge technologies that are anything but common.

In the meantime, Apple customers are careful.

The U.S. Air Force is, for the first time, converting a fighter wing from manned (F-16) combat aircraft, to unmanned ones (the MQ-9 Reaper.) The conversion, for the 174th Fighter Wing, has been in the works for three years, and the last combat sorties in manned aircraft were flown last week, by members of the 174th serving in Iraq.

Reapers have only been in combat for a year, but for the troops on the ground, and many of those operating these UAVs, the future has arrived. While the pilots of the 174th Fighter Wing will miss flying jets, as National Guard reservists, they can now do their active duty without leaving their families, and go live in a trailer over in Ir aq or Afghanistan.

AMD's 45nm Deneb strikingly good at full power load.


While at idle computing load difference in power consumption is 12% at full load it consumes strikingly 45% lower than 65nm Phenom. Using 1,5MB L3 and 15W per core at 2.3GHz clock, that is amazingly low power consumption.

Microsoft Accelerator versus Apple OpenCL

"OpenCL is going to give each of us the power of a true supercomputer on our desktops."

OpenCL is a language for GPGPU based on C99, that Apple created with cooperation from others. C99 is a revision of the C standard (ISO/IEC 9899:1999 in 1999, hence the name) which has several amendments itself. There is another revision started 2007 - "C1x". Computing is kind of like this. OpenCL's purpose - to use the power of GPU for stuff beyond graphics, as we know.

OpenCL will no doubt show up at SIGGRAPH in LA 11-15th August

Patricia Harrell, director of stream computing at AMD, agrees: "I think OpenCL makes it possible to move GPU computing from being a speciality technology to something that any developer can count on being in a system that he is writing for."

Acceptance of a Khronos-backed GPU-computing standard is not universal. "The Khronos group is the everyone-apart-from-Microsoft group," says Andrew Richards, chief executive of Codeplay, a parallel-software specialist based in Edinburgh.

For the past few years, a team at Microsoft Research has been working on an experimental system called Accelerator. "There are several other initiatives to make it easier to program GPUs," says Satnam Singh, who is investigating acceleration technologies at Microsoft Research in Cambridge.

"I don't think Microsoft will be sitting and watching. I would never underestimate Microsoft's ability to come up with alternative positions."

Bad Comment: They probably think on the lastest delivered OSs, more precisely preinstalled OSs.

Now, being at this moment XP abandoned, that simply means transition to preinstalled 64bit Vista. Right?

The trend is also evident by looking at the kinds of systems being sold at retailers. In its circular this Sunday most of the desktops and half of the dozen notebook models being advertised by Office Depot had the 64-bit version of Windows pre-installed.

Military aliens

Using a limited 56-kbps dialup modem and the hacking name "Solo" he found many U.S. security systems used an insecure Microsoft Windows program with no password protection.

Using his own computer at home in London, McKinnon hacked into 97 computers belonging to and used by the U.S. government between February 2001 and March 2002.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and it seems that one of Nvidia's key partners went and asked AMD if it needed help shifting a few more Radeon cards. It seems Nvidia's squeeze on its 20+ partners has been just too much for EVGA and it went to see what other options were available.

AMD's top brass casually told us yesterday that "[it] only needs eight partners" and that it doesn't want to damage the loyalty between them and itself after they've stuck by AMD through rough (HD 2900 XT) and the smooth (HD 4000-series).
