America on the verge of 100th bank collapse this year
CIT has been struggling to avert bankruptcy and was unable to pay a dividend scheduled on its $2.3bn of federal bailout funds.
CIT said most of its bondholders have agreed a prepackaged reorganisation plan which will reduce total debt by $10bn while allowing the company to continue to do business.
