Intel lay offs 16% of workforce

Intel lay offs 16 000. From 100 000 employees. Now, each 7th is out.

Rumors are a leapin' around Silicon Valley that Intel may end up laying off 16,000 people, and getting rid of a bunch of marketing initiatives, Viiv the unpronounceable being rumored to be one destined for the death knell. It's very AMD-ish.

While AMD is having Intel moments, and getting into Dell, and coming up with Pay As You Go PC services with Microsoft, and all kinds of fancy shmancy, idea driven things.

Here's the rub, it's AMD that has shown strong management skills in this instance, and Intel that is floundering. Possibly because Intel's executive nobility don't much like bowing to their kind, and would prefer it if they ruled in his stead. Possibly because AMD has shown the courage to loosen the ties it has to its plucky underdog past, and to act like a serious partner for corporations and OEMs.

My recent prediction was 5-15%. Intel finally did something better than expected . Some 16%.
The only consolation is that Sun lay offs too. Some 5000 of workforce. Seems all except AMD.

Go Bush.
